That's cool! It should be interesting to see what numbers he will put up on the gridiron.

I swear... if only Cookman had the state funding other HBCUs had. Our school would be :surprised: :pimp:

Looks like a beautiful campus, WSSU. I know my response has nothing to do with the post's topic, but still lol

Big fish in a small pond.

Still....they run the pond.

Congrats, WSSU!

D2 football = bottom of the FCS "pool".... the best D2 HBCU is a middle D1 HBCU.

I was going to respond negatively towards that comment but I'll say this instead.

TSU vs. WSSU would have been an excellent matchup this past season. I found that those two programs were the only programs really doing anything on the field. Quality football, good coaching, execution, determination, and consistency.

The gap between HBCU football in FCS and DII is very small...Fort Valley showed that just a couple years ago against FAMU. It has continously been shown over the last several years.

You cant be in a lesser conference and then claim to run HBCU football. It just doesnt work like that. But we've been here before so...

Just look at WSSU's schedule...

at UNC Pembroke
Sat 14 Virginia-Lynchburg
Sat 21 Tuskegee
Sat 28 at Virginia Union
Sat 5 Bowie St. *
Sat 12 Johnson C. Smith *
Sat 19 at St. Augustine's
Sat 26 at Livingstone *
Sat 2 Shaw
Sat 9 Fayetteville St. *

Now Look at Bethune Cookman's...

Sun, Sep 01 Tennessee State
Sat, Sep 07 Virginia Union
Sat, Sep 14 FIU
Sat, Sep 21 Florida State

Sat, Oct 05 Delaware State
Sat, Oct 12 Howard
Sat, Oct 19 Savannah State
Sat, Oct 26 South Carolina State
Sat, Nov 02 North Carolina Central
Sat, Nov 09 Norfolk State *
Sat, Nov 16 Hampton *
Sat, Nov 23 Florida A&M *

You, see you cant bragg about going 14-1 when you play a bunch of cream puffs all year long. WSSU wouldnt win 7 games on this schedule. ESPN doesnt even have DIII schedule on there website,. I respect WSSU for what they do in their conference at their level but, that doesnt equate to being #1 in HBCU. It just doesnt, sorry...

why was WSSU unsuccessful in the MEAC?

Could coaching possibly have played a role?

Lets look at the 2008 Season (3-8)
Lost 14-8 to A&T
Lost 16-13 to Savannah State
Lost 35-30 to Hampton
Lost 27-26 to Delaware State
Lost 23-16 to North Carolina Central
Lost 17-14 to Norfolk State
- coach Blount could not win a game playing behind - OR - coming down to the wire, tired his players out, died at the end of games. 6 of 8 losses, were by LESS than a touchdown.

Lets look at the 2009 Season (1-10) final season in the MEAC
Lost 19-10 to A&T
Lost 16-10 to Morgan state in OT
Lost 7-3 to Howard
Lost 16-10 to Bethune Cookman
Lost 16-13 to Howard
Lost 24-21 to Delaware State
Lost 18-10 to North Carolina Central
Lost 28-21 to Norfolk State
- once again coach shows, that he has the inability to win. Another 8 games lost by less than a touchdown...This could have very well been a 8-3 season.

Even before WSSU tried to go to the MEAC, I watched NCCU/St. Aug/Shaw with comeback victories time after time...he was not a good coach. He had talent that he did not know how to harness....

So lets move on to 2010, back in the CIAA with new coach.
beats two teams from the MEAC, that have beaten WSSU the last two years...NCCU/A&T

WSSU has always had the talent, I always thought the coaching was slawbage. WSSU could never compete with SCSU for whatever reason....

But WSSU was ALWAYS in every game in the MEAC, this was not no Savannah State blow outs....when you look at how many games are lost by less than a touchdown - you have to look at the coaching staff - it was always the same case. WSSU running out of steam come the end of the 3rd and into the 4th quarter.

Impactology, you know good and well that FIU, Florida State, BCU will not challenge neither of those teams past the middle of the 2nd quarter

WSSU is Division II, but WSSU has Division I talent and the best coach in HBCU Football..

Is FCS HBCU football better than the top level of D2? WSSU plays at the top level of D2.

WSSU was very powerful in 2012 and would beat every team in the MEAC\SWAC.. The CIAA is soft, the NCAA playoffs are not...

The only MEAC team of 2012 that would have hung with WSSU past halftime was BCU. . WSSU beats everybody else by atleast 14-21 points. Connell Maynor is a superior coach to everyone in the MEAC. He has won 5 playoff games.

Kam Smith was by FAR the best QB in HBCU Football. WSSU's OL were all FBS\FCS transfers.

^%$&^ what division, and who they played...you can tell the difference between WSSU teams just by watching them...

These folks talking about scores rather than what is on the field.

Top 20 DII football will stick with the best HBCU's in FCS football anyday, and WSSU beat a few top 10's on the way to their title.

Lost to a Valdosta State who has a history of DII NATIONAL championships in football.

Reducing the strides of our athletic programs over the years by allowing division II WSSU to be the posterchild of HBCU football is utter stupidity....explicitly or implicitly stated.

If the "pond" is the peak of aspiration and we know there are lakes, rivers, and oceans.....well you finish the rest

Very intriguing point....thanks for being willing to share this flawed yet real mentality. A deeper conversation should be had around this IMO.

LOL the scores to WSSU 2012 games....

Sat 1 UNC Pembroke Hall of Fame Game W, 28-23
Sat 8 at Concord College Athens, WV W, 30-22
Sat 15 vs. Morehouse Cleveland Classic W, 55-21
Sat 22 Virginia Union * Winston-Salem, NC W, 35-6
Sat 6 at Johnson C. Smith * Charlotte, NC W, 63-7
Sat 13 St. Augustine's * Winston-Salem, NC W, 56-37
Sat 20 Livingstone * Winston-Salem, NC Homecoming 2012 W, 58-0
Sat 27 at Shaw * W, 62-31
Sat 3 at Fayetteville St. * Fayetteville, NC W, 41-8
Sat 10 vs. Elizabeth City St. 2012 CIAA Championship Game W, 34-19
Sat 24 Shippensburg 2nd rnd of NCAA DII Playoffs W, 37-14 Final
Indiana (Pa.) Div II Playoff Quarterfinals W, 21-17
Sat 8 West Texas A&M NCAA DII National Semi-Finals W, 41-18 Final
Sat 15 vs. Valdosta St. Div II National Championship L, 35-7 Final

WSSU destroyed the "Cream puffs" clearly playing on another level! WSSU as voted by multiple blogs was BY FAR the best HBCU football team.

So did you watch WSSU play any games last season? I'm curious which teams would have beat WSSU?

Ugh what? Well maybe FCS HBCU's are playing at a level they can't compete in. I mean WSSU won more playoff games than the entire meac and swac have in 15 years.

This guy was better than every HBCU QB at any Meac\Swac school.

Image

Just ask A&T, NCCU he beat both back in 2010 in his first two games on the field.!!! He won 31 games as starter scored 94 TOUCHDOWNS and over 7,000 yards passing!!! Smith probably played the full 4 quarters in maybe 15 of these games!

I comprehend your point holistically. But it does you or WSSU no justice to argue there's a small margin between FCS and DII performance.

The powers that be (NCAA) have set benchmark credentials. If you dont meet those, you're automatically eliminated from certain conversations. That's not being anything but #real.
Those that accept this fair better than those that fight it.

Jake Gaither and Eddie Robinson didn't dedicate their lives to coaching for us to have OBAMA-pride about being the best at DII football 60+ years later. Very disrespectful to their legacies, if you ask me...

Lets constantly try to raise the bar....not get overjoyed at competing two notches above the high school level. Our history is richer than that.....

The title of this whole topic is just shy of blasphemy

But what have you really said???

Are you suggesting all HBCUs should reduce their classificiation by going DII?

Progressive alumni would be directing concerns to athletics/alumni association. 5th quarter topics about how WSSU reigns surpreme isnt going to get incredible recognition.

You cant play by your own rule(s) (DII is still "cool") and expect to win in competition.....you have to adhere.

You cant run HBCU football at the DII level...it's been accepted far too long that a higher caliber of talent is at the DI level. Period. Point. Blank.

All that other talk is something they're putting in the water up there.... :pimp:

lol but the MEAC champion failed to score till the 4th quarter of the 1st round of the playoffs! FCS HBCU football is literally the worst of the division. WSSU plays at the highest level of D2!!

you can spit statistics til your purple and this topic still wont be true! The truth of the matter is, your school has yet to position itself properly. And that's  because some of its alumni are looking exceedingly ignorant with this WSSU Football "RUNS SURPREME" campaign!
