To the family and friends and fellow brothers of BROTHER WILLIAM P. FOSTER:

It is often said that it is never an easy task saying farewell to one who you loved, to one who you cared for, and for one whom in turn, loved and cared for you. So it is that we struggle in part with our farewell to our dear Alpha Brother William Foster ”the man behind the baton, known as “The Maestro,” who was the creator of the noted Florida A&M University “Marching 100” bands.

Brother Foster was one of those unique Alpha men who paved the way for so many others. His gift was in music, with the melodious sounds and the groundbreaking steps and movements he revolutionized with the thousands of musicians he led during his time at FAMU from 1946 to 1998.

From the time he picked up his first clarinet as a boy, throughout his career, he would travel from his native Kansas, to Michigan, to New York and Florida. He was admitted to several regional and national halls of fame. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the National Council on the Arts. In 1992, his FAMU marching band was named the best in the country by Sports Illustrated.

Brother Foster joined our dear A Phi A in 1939, 71 years ago, at Upsilon Chapter at the University of Kansas. He lived a full life, and yes a long life. While we are saddened by his “going home,” our sadness is tempered by our pride and joy knowing that he always held the aims of Alpha up high. Indeed he represented the very best of Alpha Phi Alpha by being first of all, and a servant all.

On behalf of the entire fraternity leadership team, including the Board of Directors, the General Office Staff, and every unit of our General Organization from the General Convention to local chapters around the world, I offer our sincerest condolence to Brother Foster’s family, friends and all those he was close too, in Tallahassee, Fla., and around the world.

Love never fails.

Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr.
General President
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
