The Jackson State University family is saddened by the passing of Dr. Jimmie James, Jr., the former chair of the JSU Department of Music.

Dr. James, a 1960 graduate of Jackson State University, retired chair of the music department and legendary halftime announcer, passed Sunday, June 25, 2017 at about 7:30 pm.

Dr. James received a bachelor of music education degree from JSU and graduated cum laude as JSU's first tuba major. James began his professional career in 1966, six years after graduating from the then Jackson State College. The Hattiesburg native was most commonly known as the voice of the Sonic Boom of The South, a position he held since his first year of employment at JSU. Dr. James cultivated a unique ability to awe thousands with his signature introductions of the JSU marching band during the halftime performances.

One of his most well known introductory lines is, "Fine tune your sensory apparatus."

Dr. James retired from JSU in 2009. During his 43-year tenure, he served as a professor, band director, director of musical activities, coordinator of the Graduate Music Program, director of the concert band, assistant band director, and director of the brass ensemble. In 2011, Dr. James and wife Carrie James established the Jimmie and Carrie James Endowed Scholarship for students studying music. In 2014, the Recital Hall in the F.D. Hall Music Center was renamed in James' honor.

Shortly before his retirement, JSU released this video with Dr. James talking about his experience at JSU. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7KfkpRfK30

Please keep the family of Dr. James in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
