These two schools have played each other in the past in football and the bands battled. The Freedow Bowl of 1991 in Atlanta, Ga. Here are the band clips:

Unfortunately, SC State's band has been just "okay" in recent years. I don't know if it was due to budget cuts the University was dealing with or if there was a band leadership change. Either way, they have struggled some. Don't get me wrong, they are still one of the better bands in the MEAC, but not as dominate as in past years.

It was both the removal of the former band director and financial issues. Mr. Ellis was let go after the 2014 season. He served as a music professor, as well as, director of bands. They then chose John Robinson to serve as interim band director, who is another music professor who was recently made permanent band director. Robinson served as assistant director of bands a few years under Mr. Ellis. So he was no stranger to the band, the make up of the band and the sound during the Ellis years changed quite a bit. Due to the financial issues the school has had these past few years, the band lost huge numbers under Mr. Ellis due to the loss of scholarship money that was given to students. Without that money, many students could not return to the band or to school. There were other band members who were highly upset with how Mr. Ellis was let go and decided they would not return to the band. So for the past few years since Mr. Ellis departure, we have what we have. Hopefully this year will be better.

Thank you for sharing that insight. As a long time HBCU Marching Band fan, I hated to see SC State decline. Since I'm very familiar with the financial challenges HBCUs face, I understand that those challenges can directly impact the band. Most HBCU bands can weather most of these financial challenges "if" they have a stable dedicated band staff. But if you have turnover at the band leadership, the band will suffer.

The band leadership at Southern, Bethune Cookman, Grambling, NC A&T, Tennessee State, Jackson State, Alabama A&M and Prairie View have done a fantastic job keeping the quality of their programs at a high level despite tremendous financial challenges.

But how much of their budget was decreased compared to SCSU? SCSU issue is complete different than the bands you named.

I think that until our leadership at SCSU as a whole (President & his administration) begin to treat the Marching 101 as a priority and as one the most effective marketing tools for our university because it is one the school's most visible entities, I believe the fraction of a band that we have had since the departure of Mr. Eddie Ellis is our new normal.
