I don't kno if i'm considerd an "Old Head"

Here is the thing. Everyone by now knows what happend to us. The thing is I MISS MARCHING SO MUCH. Sometimes no lie I get depressed that I can't march. I even have dreams that I'm at practice or a game and it feels so real then I wake up pissed off cause it was just a dream.

Is anyone else goin thru this???

I can relate. Sometimes I will avoid BOTBs and football games for that very reason. Very few experiences can match marching into a stadium and being cheered by thousands.

Makes you want to get down on the field and march, only to realize that was 10 years ago.

yeah...i miss the feeling of game day too. you hit it right on the head...marching in playing knights, then doing that slow march to out spots in the stands....playing the now-extinct 20 + minute gogo mix...and ending the uber long 5th quarter with Skin...yeah...marching was great!! and bus trips...boy you have never heard comedy until you ride an hbcu band bus lol

i DONT miss band practice though...or more specifically, smelling liek sweat every day, not being able to get my hair or feet done cause they would get messed up saturday anyway, or having a continuous body ache from august til november....OR BEING PASSED UP FOR HONDA....

but i have times when i listen to old band cds...and my fingers move with what i would have been playing...give me a clarinet now and i'm sure i would still know a good majority of my music...ESPECIALLY Skin lol

Things I miss:

Night games
Shutting another band down and they had no clue it was coming
Impromptu battles in the tunnel
The crowd getting into the performance and not just clapping at the end
Making car alarms go off

Things I don't miss:

How hot the suits get at the beginning of the season
How little warmth the suits give towards the end of the season
Practicing in the rain
Doing a parade in the rain
Drunk mofos

I miss the night games too.

I remember during one of our first games some old heads came when we was in the stands and was passin around a "bottle" I was thirsty as hell cause it was hot as hell so I took it to the head (no homo). Well it was a "special" beverage and I am definetly not a drinker so lets just say I was messed up.

I can definitely relate.

The bus rides
the overnight trips.
drunkeness had its moments
The random bus games
the thousands cheering for you
The tens of thousands cheering at NFL games
MEAC TOURNEY!!!!

but then again, there are times that i don't miss....but its one of those things that i would go through again because you always take the bad with the good.....

not to mention, it hurts even more when you see your band at a lower level then where you left.....

It was fun while it lasted. had good times and a few bad, but the good overshadowed that. when it comes to college band i feel like i accomplished all my goals. went from watchin band tapes to bein on the frontline of every tape from 2002-2006. it was great.

I couldn't even start to understand how it feels to be cut short by a program shuting down, but you could find a program to work with. I'm almost 10 years removed from suiting up and thats what I still do to get my fix.

Ya'll are so young.

But I know how you feel. Once you get a few DECADES between the last time you suited up and the present, that feening to get back on the field will lessen, but not COMPLETELY go away.

I look at clips of the Legion now and I can't believe I used to do that! I can honestly say that I have NO desire to get out there and do what they do...that stuff looks HARD!

My heart remembers all the good stuff (band trips, getting "house", seeing little kids' faces when we marched in parades) but my bad knee remembers the not-so-pleasant stuff (aching feet, aching thighs, the HEAT, the COLD).

Watching from a distance gets a little easier with time. But if it doesn't...there's always Alumni band.

I don't have withdrawal. I march all the time lol.

Now, I don't get out there as much as I used to, nor do I have a desire to suit up, but I WILL do a few hundred yards here and there with the current DMs.

Once a year, I'll march... with the alumni band.

That's more my speed. Too old to be out there with the young'ins.

I fought against withdrawal by joining the staff. Although I really, REALLY want to pull out my trumpet and wail every now and then, the thought of a drum major 5-8 years younger than me telling me to do push-ups for any reason brings me back down to earth. Besides, I've traded my spats for a baton, so it's all good.

*two years later*

yeah.....that missing band feeling has died considerably. I miss playing clarinet on a regular basis, but there are other ways to play. I don't need to march.

No Withdrawals .... I left it all out on the field during my day.

Coming back Homecoming to do a couple 100 yards with the Squad and play in the Stands with the Bones holds me down each year.

I"ll still young enough to do all of the Homcoming perfomances so i will abuse it till my body says no more. lol

But No Withdrawals like Vic said

Constantly, but it's not as bad since i got on staff. Making decisions is great, but not playing is what i miss the most.

I have been to only 2 games since I last marched in 98, that is by design because I can't handle not marching. As a former DM, I love being on the field and the center of attention. I just relegate myself to watching YouTube clips by myself bc no one in my home understands me. For Halloween I put on my DM uniform to trick or treat with the kids. Lol real talk.

Well I'm definitely an old band head...I marched from 1965 to 1969 and then another 25 plus years with our Alumni Band and I still love to march. I stopped marching in the Alumni Band a few years ago not because I couldn't march but because too many "do nothings" were showing up to march. You know who I'm talking about...every HBCU Alumni Band has them...they show up on Homecoming just to march and complain about what the current band isn't doing now. They BLEEP about the band program, wave to all their friends along the parade route and don't contribute a darn dime to the band.

Despite the fact that I stopped marching I still get chills every time I hear an HBCU Marching Band. I go to YouTube daily and watch every HBCU band performance...SWAC, MEAC, CIAA doesn't matter. And now I'm even checking out DCI stuff. Who would have thought it! 10 to 15 years ago I hated corp style bands but I've learned to really appreciate their sound. Still cannot get into the xylophones.

I hate the months after the Honda Battle of the Bands to late August when band camp start. And the first thing I do when I visit band camp the first week is check out the expressions on the freshmen musicians. I remember my first week in the college band and I never will forget how excited I was. Come to think of it, it's the same excitement I feel today when I see a great marching band.
