For the eighth consecutive year, U.S. News has produced a ranking measuring the quality of the undergraduate education at historically black colleges and universities. In order to be on the list, a school must be currently designated by the U.S. Department of Education as an HBCU. To qualify for the U.S. News ranking, an HBCU also must be an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students and must be a school that is part of the 2015 Best Colleges rankings.

If an HBCU is listed as Unranked in the 2015 Best Colleges rankings, it is also listed as Unranked in the HBCU rankings

In total, there were 80 HBCUs eligible to be included on the list; 69 of those were ranked and 11 of those were Unranked.

USNWR Rankings appear as if HBCUs don't compete w/ predominately white schools, which i s untrue.

Washington Monthly takes into account many factors; especially graduating low-income and minority students. With those metrics considered, HBCUs are some of the best schools in the country.

JSU, SCSU, NCAT, Tenn St, FAMU and Howard are all among the top 100 National Universities, out of 277.

I would like to see a list of HBCU's with Master's and Doctoral degrees in music. Specificly in Instrumental Conducting

there's not one with a doctorate in music.
Off the top of my head, these have MM or MMEd in Music

I tend to always favor the Washington Monthly rankings. The research methodology more closely aligns with our universal mission as HBCUs and when it boils down to it social mobility, research and service are what higher education is all about. . When you're as selective as Yale, can you really brag about the students you "produce"?

1. SCSU is in the same boat so I can't throw stones....

2. You can be selective if the school carries clout because you went there.

Presidents went to schools like these. If people are beating down your door to get in, then you can afford to be selective, and the retention rate at those school have to be above the norm.



Wow... some of these schools I never would have guessed.... We need one in GA at least....

It may have been 2011 or 2012, but WM ranked JSU #9 in the country, just ahead of Yale.
