Hey all,

With education being a key part of upgrading and improving our society, a threat to cut down educational programs hurts us as a whole. As many college students and faculty may know, your university has administrators that review the budget for the upcoming year and make decisions as to what can be kept as it is and what could be cut down or eliminated altogether. Well, my school (The University of South Florida) is going through that phase, and one of the proposed cuts in the budget affects many liberal arts programs. This includes Women's Studies, Africana Studies, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

As a part of the Africana Studies program (which has the only masters program in the state), the threat of cutting the budget for the department would potentially damage it, and leave it to be a program that would merge with other programs in the Arts & Sciences portion of the school. As a result, degress that are currently offered now may not be there in the near future. Some faculty members could lose jobs also.

This has been an ongoing problem with most universities when it comes to the budget crisis that they usually seem to have. It looks like they always cut (or eliminate) programs of education, without getting any response from students, or in some cases faculty members. The students that are in the programs at our school will be protesting this proposal of cuts next week...

Has there been anything similar to this that happened at your school? If so, how did you react to it?
