Who will field the largest program this year?

Assuming Donovan Wells remains committed to the size he established in 2003, the Marching Wildcats will be around 320 to 350.

Is there another HBCU program that's likely to field more than 300?

On the Meac side, I believe BCU will be the largest HBCU band this marching season. I read somewhere that FAMU will only be about half the size we have been accustomed to seeing of them, but I have to see this one for myself. The numbers were down at SCSU last season and I've heard the same will be true for this season, so we won't see the large SCSU band like the editions they showed us in 2007 - 2011.

On the Swac side, it seems Alabama State has always emerged as the largest band. From the clips I saw, it looks like JSU numbers are back up to about what we are used to seeing of them. SU looks to be about the same as their last year's band based on the clips I've seen of them.

Overall, BCU and/or Alabama St. will most likely be the largest bands in the HBCU world.

You probably already know this, but in the very, very, very, very slim chance you don't, that number I estimated includes 14k, flags and DMs, plus instrumentalists.

Naw I'm not sure where you got those numbers from which is why I posed the question. Sure I don't know your program like you do... but I do know how to count. Ever since he opened up the ranks... 56 times 4 company fronts is 224 plus give or take 5 DMs 12 14k and maybe 16-18 flags... roughly 260!? That's why I asked if there will be at least 100 people on the sidelines based on your estimated numbers. There has been an whole heep of people on the sidelines over the years.

Am I wrong?

Chit I thought FAMU couldn't count not you all too!

I think they'll be closer to 300....as we've averaged the last decade or so. Stan you're pretty accurate on your field count (all components included). But there have been seasons where we have anywhere from 20-40 people on the side line.

Jimmy, I don't think we've ever been over 320. We've been close on some years but I don't think we've ever been quite that big.

I haven't gotten any reports on numbers this year. I haven't really even asked either...

I like to call them the "Volume Ranks"

ya bring 320 for the stands

put 220 on the field for the show

lol

I laugh when people talk about when we had over 400 on the field. I'm like, "When?" :handicap: I've seen 350-375, but not 400+. But hey, who am I?

Either way, I know it won't be FAMU in 2013.

Stan: My response to you was in regards to your "100 people in the sidelines" comment you posted, which you knew was inaccurate. Give or take the Pride will be around 300 with about 20 to 25 on the sidelines competing for spots on the field.

I've seen a few bands march 192 on the field and people post saying they have 300... I generally just keep scrolling.

I saw a pic of the 100 at practice, looked like 4 ranks of 32...

From my understanding Cookman is a little smaller this year, but like already posted the number on the field is still the same.

To clarify on the numbers for Cookman's band this year, I saw a video on facebook on them marching in the bandroom and I counted each section (like a true band geek lol) and yes they are a little smaller this year.

12 piccolos
34 clarinets
25 saxophones
41 trumpets
9 mellophones :handicap:
19 euphoniums
31 trombones
25 tubas
43 percussion
18 flags
11 14k
5 DMs

Total in all: 273

Still awesome numbers nonetheless. Especially when you consider what some of these other schools are going through...

I always like to make sure (ESPECIALLY my younger folk from BCU) that we keep close by that we were once a very small band virtually unheard of MEAC football games. I think the program has accomplished alot over the past 15-20 years or so under the leadership of Mr. Wells and I just want to make sure that folk don't get brand new and strat tootin their nose up because we "ONLY got 25 tubas"....

Sometimes these new kids don't even care WHERE they came from. They just care about the "now" not realizing that while they talk about other small bands that may not be all that good...we used to be that band. Sure we had some good years and good bands but that wasn't always the case. I guess, what i'm trying to say is that I am grateful for my band program that in the midst of budget cuts, tighter restrictions, smaller pools of talent, that BCU has been able to weather the storm and not only maintain but THRIVE in what seems to be a new age in HBCU show bands.

Sorry about the tangent. I just had a moment....

Less than a handful that actually MARCHED over 300.

I think the closest a SWAC band got was with Prairie View, and in the MEAC, FAMU and possibly BCU.

Oh wow, ok. SCSU has NEVER been over 300? Didn't realize that, but then again, I guess 270 probably looked like 0ver 300 when on a field or in the stands.

Bama State, SCSU, FAMU, BCU either marched 300 or came VERY CLOSE to it at some point.

Bats - I think the "400" comments from folks came from Joe Bullard announcing FAMU as being 415 or 430 or mentioning "430 instrumentalists" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YZWBJrDUiA (the audio on this one isn't as clean....I remember hearing it on a different copy of this video).
