Appears they are going by size of band and not conference for voting.
Group 1 (128 or less)
Group 2 (129-160)
Group 3 (161+)
Doesnt count auxiliary or drum majors. Just instrumentalists.

Four bands picked by fans, four by them. Sorry if this topic is posted elsewhere on the 5th...

From the website:
How are the bands selected?
The Honda Battle of the Bands program includes two components -- the Voting Process, which runs September through October 2013, and the Invitational Showcase on January 25, 2014.

Voting:
The first band will be selected by popular vote (i.e. the top overall vote-getter will be selected regardless of category).

The next three bands will be selected, one from each category by a weighted vote of 1/3 from institution president, band director and online opinion poll from category I, II and III. The categories being 128 instruments or less, 129 instruments up to 160 and 161 or more. This count is total instrument count, no auxiliaries, drum majors, etc. but will include percussion.

a. Online Opinion Poll from hondabattleofthebands.com – 1/3 weight
b. Band Directors Votes'* - 1/3 weight
c. Presidents Votes'* - 1/3 weight

Note: Band directors and presidents cannot vote for their own school.

Honda/USEG will select the final four bands based on, but not limited to:

a. Showmanship
b. Social Media Buzz
c. Years of previous participation in the Celebration Tour

Sounds like honda is getting tired of all these weaker programs getting in. What they're doing is actually beneficial from a business perspective. They're being politically correct by allowing the common vote, but they can generate profit by selecting their big money programs.

Time for MVSU to go they are the only SWAC band who havent. Plus I would say weak because thesmaller bands are the ones who give you something new the bigger bands come with the same stuff we just saw in november...time for new bands.

I'm not saying that because you're small that you're automatically weak, but that is usually the case with smaller programs. Forget how great a school's overall music program may be or whatever accolades they may have, at honda its all about your show period. Having a world class symphonic band nor having performed on the moon will help you at halftime. We have to look at things from a bandhead and business perspective and get out of our feelings. If the schools with the biggest fan base happen to be your larger more popular programs then that's who you should want. Lets be real if I said the lineup was JSU,SU,FAMU,BCU,SCSU,NCAT,TXSU,and MBC (assuming they were still relevant) who would argue that this would be the best line up ever. Band heads would flock to see premiere schools in attendance together, which generates more profit for honda. When most see CAU,Albany,Elizabeth city, Miles, etc the common thought is we aren't missing anything if we get there late. Basically they're the previews before the movie and that translates to a less exciting show overall and lost profit. Just imagine how many more people would come EARLY if honda said F#?$ being fair we're having an all star line up.

Social media buzz? How are they monitoring that in an unbiased way? They might as well gone ahead and add the bands with the most YouTube hits. Again...

Let's be honest. The organizers have always found a way to get the bands invited that they want to be there. They are just being a little but less evasive in stating that these days.

They could have said that 5 years ago and totally did away with the bogus "voting process" that has been in place, since it really never accounted for much to begin with. Ultimately, who they want to go will go, whether they have 843,610 votes or 6 views on youtube.

Why is PV in the 161+ group :wtf: Clearly honda didn't do their research on the bands this year. There are a couple schools that need category changes, but it would be funny to see the look on everyone's face if PV came missing the other "100" members.

The BCS of the HBCU band world.

But i'll be honest, this is way better than picking two from each conference because every year you had a couple bands that were just "there". I mean, they performed but I wouldnt say that they added entertainment value to the event. It's almost like the starter salad before the ultimate feast. You get it because it comes with the meal, but you wouldnt be mad if you completely wasted it or not even had it at all.

Now there have been some good oepening bands but i've seen more snoozers than anything especially when folk are waiting for the mor well-known bands.

It's politics but this may bring us a better line-up. Now if you dont like the process that's one thing, but if they peice together a solid line up then i'm for it. We'll just have to wait and see...

Eff politics. This is about that almighty DOLLA! Is it safe to assume that as of lately Honda hasnt been seein major ROIs, so this new process will basically assure that they'll be gettin a huge bang for their buck now (or again)???

Yeah that too. Honda has been doing well lately. I remember some years ago folk were on here talking about how Honda wasnt sellin out anymore.... That's hardly the case. They have tweaked and tweaked and are finally getting this thing to pack out and turn a profit and put on a good show.

It's the business of business.
